Conor Week 5-6

This week, I watched Roman Polanski's "Knife In The Water". I thought that there were some really intelligent shots in this film that told a lot about the story. Not a lot necessarily happens in the film, but the psychological interactions between characters is quite intense. Polanski portrays a lot of this his choice of shots in the film.

The ideas of male ego and attraction are very prevalent in the film and below are some shots that I felt got these ideas across really well.

This long focus shot gives the viewer a look inside the older man's mind in the film. We sense his discomfort at the sight of his wife walking off with the younger man through seeing clearly his line of sight across the water.

The shot has both literal and metaphorical context i the film which is something I saw throughout the piece and really enjoyed
This shot is almost a reverse of the previous with the young man's sight fixed on the woman with her husband obstructing his view.

This shot has a similar effect, giving a window into the young man's intentions in the film. This gave a great sense of foreshadowing and I felt that it was very effective alongside the previous shot
I really enjoyed the symbolism and suggestion in this shot. This is the final shot in the film where the man and his wife sit literally at a crossroads after all that has taken place. It is symbolic also of their relationship and the rest of their life together. I think it was a very clever shot as it made sense in terms of the narrative, but also created a powerful metaphor.

I felt it was a very good close to the film and allowed the viewer to make up their own minds about the ending.

I revisited this opening scene of Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now". I really like the shape matching of the helicopter blades and the fan in this scene. I also thought that the use of cross-fades was really effective in bridging what was in the scene and what was in the character's mind.

The shots and ideas mentioned above have given me a lot of inspiration for shot ideas and how I can portray some of the themes of our project.
